Barthel, Alvin of Merrick passed away on December 5th at 98. He was a devoted husband and father; married to the late Ruthene for over 70 years, and proud father of Nancy. He is survived by his son-in-law John, his two grandsons, and two great granddaughters. He lived in Merrick for over 60 years after moving from upstate NY to work at Gruman. He served in the Army during the occupation of Japan, as well as the Korean War. After his discharge he started and ran his own business for over 30 years. He was involved in a variety of community activities focused mainly on service. He was an active member of the Kiwanis Club, where he held many positions, including president, during his 50 year tenure. His viewing will be at N.F. Walker Funeral Home 2039 Merrick Ave., Merrick on Tuesday the 15th 2-4pm and 7-9pm, with services at the funeral home at 8pm with Rev. Cheri Kroon. Entombment Weds. Dec. 16 at Pinelawn Memorial Park, Farmingdale NY. In lieu of flowers, a contribution can be made to the Nancy Anderson Scholarship Fund at Holy Trinity H.S. 98 Cherry Ln, Hicksville, NY 11801.
