Truly an amazing artisan/ craftsman, and a really great guy. I have so many fond memories and met some wonderful people while working at the museum, especially Sal Polisi. He was such a generous man, who was always there for you if you needed help. A great character whose laugh would reverberate around the model shop, which would double as his workshop, and also as a gathering place for many of us to swap stories and yarns especially on dark winters evenings. He was always happy to see you.
When my wife and I left and moved to Texas, I missed the Seaport so much I called Sal at the model shop, I said I really miss you guys and he replied "well we miss you too, come on back " I didn't of course but just hearing those words from Sal made it a lot easier for me. Rest in peace Sal thanks for being a friend ...Mike Bull ( boat shop)

It was only a few weeks ago that I discovered Sal's work on the Internet although the irrevocable laws that govern who goes and who stays prevented me from ever meeting him. I intended to visit Sal at his studio in early Spring and imagined that it would be a nice way to start a new and special friendship. I was sure that we had many things in common: A love for working with tools and natural materials and of course our distant relatives who not long ago crossed the Atlantic settling in what were to become unique enclaves that years later attracted people from all over the world. Our vintage family members with their old world tenacity of holding on to traditions and honoring a work ethic that sometimes precluded earning a degree but nurtured the indisputable priority for preserving family values. (Continued on next post..)

As a distant admirer I heard about Sal and how he methodically gained a following through his talent and passion to succeed in a city with a reputation for not granting second chances. In the past I reserved grieving sudden loss for close family members or someone endeared by friendship. I never considered that in time I could ever feel a deep sense of loss for someone I never met or talked to. Sal, my never to be friend was the exception.

I can well imagine that today in, let’s say Germany, there is a young man who visited South Street Seaport Museum twenty years ago with his parents and stopped into the Ship Model and Carving Shop at the head of Pier 15. Sal Polisi was there and put down his chisel, greeted that child, hoisted him up to look at his latest carving project. Sal took him out the door under the bows of the mighty Wavertree and showed him where the figurehead would go – the one modeled in clay just inside the shop door.
That child -- and many others, and many adults too -- might not have understood all of what Sal was telling him, but he surely today remembers the gentle, welcoming man who took the time to show him the wonders of the Historic District. Sal was amongst the finest of the Seaport Museum volunteers. Sal’s legacy remains as one of the finest examples of what the Museum and District were once, and could be again.
I will always remember Sal.

Dear Susan: We are so sorry to hear of Sal's passing. He was a wonderful person who always seemed to look at the brighter side of everything, an attitude that was infectious.
No matter how down or hopeless a situation seemed, Sal always seemed able to find the humor in it. He would laugh and that would make you laugh too. In my mind, I will always see him with a cup of coffee in one hand and a mallet in the other, and covered with wood shavings. Thank you so much for sharing this incredible person with so many of us. We shall miss and cherish him always.

Susan, we are so sad to hear of Sal's death. We will always remember how he helped us out with Michella when she was in college on Long Island, and his good cooking and humor during your summer event for the NY health care group. He was a lovely man, never to be forgotten. I hope his last days were comfortable and peaceful.

One of Sal's wood carvings he made for my friend, John Manson. Copy of the grasshopper weathervane on Faneuil Hall in Boston. John and I worked together for National Park Service in Boston and John did many historic talks in Faneuil Hasll. I asked Sal to make a replica for John's retirement. Sal loved making this.
John treasures it. Sheila

I grew to know and love Sal after he married Susan, one of my dearest friends. Sal was one of the warmest, most gracious gentlemen I've had the honor to know. He had the gift of making everyone in his presence seem special, a a very rare gift.
As a Christian, I firmly believe that Sal has passed to another plain and is in very good and well deserved company.
And I pray that Susan remembers that she was loved by Sal and knows that she is loved and supported by many dear friends.

Sal,
I will miss you! When you married Susan, I finally was not alone as the only Kayser in-law! I will miss you teaching me how to cook Italian, showing Dave and I the boroughs of NYC, eating at your favorite diner in Brooklyn, visiting your cousin, John the butcher, exploring the Seaport Museum, looking at all of your wonderful carvings and hearing your laughter! Dave and I are so fortunate to have had you in our lives. We had a lot of great laughs! We are also lucky to have carvings you created just for us. As you often said to me when we were leaving after a visit, "So long, buddy!" I will miss my Buddy!
Love you, Sheila
