MURPHY. Charles A. "Charlie" Murphy of North Merrick on June 9, 2012, formerly of Freeport. Loving husband of Loyola "Lou." Dear father of Charles J., Ann Peterson and her husband the late John, Daniel and his wife Dr. Marguerite, David and his wife Karen and Dr. Donald and his wife Dr. Laura. Beloved grandfather of 13 and great grandfather of 2. A World War II U. S. Army veteran and member of the famed 10th Mountain Division, the only mountain ski unit in U. S. military history. Graduate of Freeport High School, State University of New York at Cortland and Hofstra University. While at Cortland, he won the Syracuse Golden Gloves in boxing. He worked as an English Teacher and coach of football, track and wrestling in the Oceanside Public Schools for 31 years, but continued to coach for some years after. He also coached football and track at C. W. Post College and was inducted into C.W. Post's Track Hall of Fame. He supervised recreational activities such as Little League baseball, gymnastics and boxing. He organized and participated in boxing shows in Oceanside and Madison Square Garden. He was a long-time high school and college wrestling referee and past president of the Wrestling Officials Association. He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church, a member of the Holy Name Society, an usher for many years, and CYO coach. He often said "My greatest accomplishment has been raising and educating a family of five children on a teacher's salary with the loving assistance of my wife of 62 years, Loyola. " Visiting N.F. Walker, Inc. Funeral Home 2039 Merrick Ave. Merrick Weds. From 2-4 and 7-9pm. Funeral Mass Sacred Heart R.C. Church 720 N. Merrick Ave. N. Merrick Thurs. June 14 at 10:45am. Interment in Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville NY on Friday. In lieu of flowers donations in his name to Sacred Heard R.C. Church 'Building Fund' 720 N. Merrick Ave, N. Merrick NY 11566 will be appreciated.
