In Loving Memory of Sui Lin Chan ("Sue")
The Matriarch, Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother
Sui Lin Chan, affectionately known as Sue, was born in Hong Kong, to her beloved parents ( Pak-Wah Chan) and (Yuk- Ying Shum) on (3/23/1937).
Sue's childhood was shaped by the love and attention of her father, who cherished her as the eldest daughter in a time when women were often undervalued. Her father, a Sergeant in the Hong Kong Police Force and a prisoner of war during the Japan-China conflict, was a towering figure in her life. His wisdom and strength inspired many of the lessons Sue later passed on to her grandchildren—Douglas Leung, Jason Ng, and Jeffrey Ng—through her vivid stories and enduring values.
Sue dedicated her life to nurturing her family with her husband, Kwong Shing Leung. Together, they built a loving home where their two children, Carol and Anthony, thrived. Despite her self-professed lack of enthusiasm for cooking, Sue tirelessly prepared meals for her family, often repeating the same dish that would last for a week. Her husband never complained, appreciating the effort and love behind every meal.
Sue had big dreams for her children. She kept a spotless home and ensured they were always impeccably dressed and well-mannered. For Carol, she opened doors to the fine arts, encouraging her to pursue piano, singing, and acting, planting the seeds of Carol's deep passion for music. With Anthony, she instilled diligence, hard work, and an unwavering sense of responsibility, qualities that paved the way for his incredible success in the field of computers and information technology.
Despite their comfortable life in Hong Kong, Sue made the bold decision to leave it behind for the sake of her children's future. She sent Carol and Anthony to Canada before college to prepare them for the opportunities of a Western education. Eventually, she joined them in Calgary, embracing a new life to stay close to her family.
When Carol married and welcomed her first child, Jason, Sue moved to Merrick, where she spent her golden years surrounded by the warmth of her growing family. It was here that the stern matriarch softened, becoming a nurturing grandmother who showered her grandchildren with love, life lessons, and the biggest, juiciest portions at family meals. For her children and Kwong, she was always right. But for her grandchildren - Douglas, Jason, and Jeffrey - they were never wrong.
Sue treasured her cultural heritage and ensured her grandchildren did too, spending Sunday mornings before church teaching Jason and Jeffrey Cantonese. Through these lessons, she shared cherished stories of her parents and the values that had guided her life. Although she received only a middle school education, Sue often joked that her voracious curiosity and love for learning - gleaned from radio programs and television shows - could have made her a doctor.
Dignified and eloquent, Sue was the heart of the Chan family. Her brothers and sisters looked to her for wisdom and comfort, and her calm, steady voice often brought resolution in difficult times.
She continued to pour her boundless love into her two great-granddaughters, Kaylee and Hailey Ng, who affectionately knew her as "Tai Pw-ah." While she had always been known for spoiling her grandchildren, she took it to a whole new level with her great-granddaughters, showering them with even more warmth, affection, and indulgence than ever before.
Now, Sue has left her earthly bonds to join her husband Kwong in the embrace of God. She leaves behind a profound legacy-a testament to the strength, love, and sacrifice of a woman who shaped generations. Though she humbly called herself a "stay-at-home mom," her impact was immeasurable.
Sue will be remembered always as a beacon of love, strength, and grace, lighting the way for all who were fortunate enough to know her.
