Maurice Thomas McElligott Obituary McElligott, Maurice T., of Huntington, New York, passed away peacefully on May 14, 2023 at the age of 91 after a long illness. Maurice was the son of Maurice and Bridget McElligott, and was born in the Bronx, New York on September 27, 1931. He resided in Huntington, New York for over 47 years. Maurice was committed to public service, and he greatly valued education, hard work, and spending time with his family. He was a fair-minded person who tried to help people throughout his life. Maurice graduated from St. John's College in 1952 and served as a Captain in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War between 1952 and 1954. Maurice continued to serve as a Captain in the Reserves until 1964. Following his Marine Corps service, Maurice attended St. John's University Law School at night while working and he graduated in 1959. For the first twelve years of his legal career, he was a corporate attorney for Westinghouse, Borden, and Bristol-Myers in New York City. Beginning in 1972, and continuing for the next forty-eight years, he dedicated his career to public service. In 1972, he became an Assistant District Attorney in Suffolk County, and in 1988 he was elected to New York State District Court Judge. Maurice was elected to New York State Family Court Judge in 1994. After reaching mandatory retirement age for a judge, he served as a Judicial Hearing Officer until the age of 88. He was a devoted spouse, married for 49 years to Susan McElligott. He was the loving father to his three children, Dr. Suzanne McElligott, Maurice E. McElligott, and Kristen McElligott Warden, and the cherished grandfather to Elizabeth Barres, Alexander Barres, Katelyn Warden, and William Warden. Maurice is also survived by his dear sister Catherine Ryan. Maurice was pre-deceased by his sisters Mary Henschel, Hannah Betts, Theresa McGuinness, and Margaret McElligott. Maurice greatly loved his family and friends, was generous and kind, had a thoughtful spirit, and a great sense of humor. His family and friends loved listening to his colorful stories and his wise advice. Maurice's favorite beach was West Neck Beach in Huntington and he loved spending time there with his family. His passing is a loss to all who knew him. Waking hours will be conducted on Sunday May 21 from 3 to 8 PM at the N.F. Walker Funeral Home, located at 2039 Merrick Avenue, Merrick, New York 11566. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday May 22 at 11 A.M. at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church located at 175 Wolf Hill Road, Melville, New York, 11747 and internment will follow at Calverton National Cemetery, located at 210 Princeton Boulevard, Calverton, New York, 11933.
