The Dash
I read of a man who stood to speak at a funeral of a friend. He referred to the dates on the tombstone from the beginning…to the end.
He noted that first came the date of birth and spoke of the following date with tears but said what mattered most of all was the dash between those years.
For that dash represents all the time they spent alive on earth and now only those who loved them know what that little line is worth.
For it matters not, how much we own, the cars…the house…the cash. What matters is how we lived and loved and how we spend our dash.
So, think about this long and hard; are there things you’d like to change? For you never know how much time is left that still can be rearranged.
To be less quick to anger and show appreciation more and love the people in our lives like we’ve never loved before.
If we treat each other with respect and more often wear a smile…remembering that this special dash might only last a little while.
So, when your eulogy is being read, with your life’s actions to rehash, would you be proud of the things they say about how you lived your dash?

All the things I will miss about you:
~I will miss your Angel Christmas card each year (I’m still looking for your stash)
~I will miss spending every holiday with you….Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, Labor Day (where we would always celebrate your birthday along with Martin, Nick and sometimes Mike).
~I will miss your raisin gravy….the Christmas ham or Easter “Ham of God” will never be the same.
~I will miss the sweets and cranberry relish. I might even miss the creamed onions.
~I will miss all the pies and cakes you made - thank you for leaving us the recipes.
~I will miss you telling me not to stack the plates after dinner.
~I will miss your calls….on our birthdays, when someone isn’t feeling well, to check in on the kids, or just to say hello!
~I will miss you always being there when we most needed you. You came to the hospital when my Mom was dying just to say goodbye. You sat by Martins side with me when he was on a ventilator with Legionnaires. We never had to ask, you just came because you knew we needed you.
~I will miss your notes and hand written letters thanking us for a wonderful time or tips on things like how to microwave corn or a baked potato.
~I will miss your sewing abilities….sewing cushion covers for my outdoor chairs, making little stockings for the kids at Christmas.
~I will miss having tea with you at the table with Cookie.
~I will miss your stories….funny stories about my in-laws and interesting stories about your German heritage and growing up long ago.
~I will miss your smile.
~I will miss your warm heart and beautiful soul. You never had a bad word to say about anyone. All who had the honor of meeting you loved you. How could you not?
~I will miss your classiness. Always well put together. Your clothes that you made, your hair, your choice of accessories, were always as classy as you.
~I will miss how you loved all animals, big or small. Dogs, cats, birds, ferrets...even Shannon's pet rat. I hope your entire furry family met you at the rainbow bridge.
~I will miss you standing by the front door waving goodbye as we drove away.
Most of all, I will miss you. All of you. Every. Single. Day.
Love you with all my heart Aunt Marianne. Thank you for all the memories and the unconditional love you gave to all of us. Our world will never be the same without you.
