Obituary of Evelyn J. Evans

Please share a memory of Evelyn to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Evelyn Jean Evans, a beloved mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend passed away on January 2, 2023, at the age of 90, after living a long and vibrant life. She is survived by her loving daughters, Jill Grocky and Cathy LoBianco, her six grandchildren, and twelve great grandchildren. Evelyn was born on November 10, 1932, in Boston, Massachusetts to Dorothea Anderson and Joseph Robertson. She was the middle child and loved her older sister Dorothy and younger brother James. She went to Hempstead High School and graduated in 1952. She enjoyed school and made lifelong friendships. Evelyn’s first job was at the Long Island Lighting Company. She then drove school buses and later came to have a long and successful career at the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA). She started as a transit driver and worked her way up to the supervisor of the Hempstead Terminal. After retiring from the MTA, she worked at Joann Fabrics selling sewing machines and providing sewing lessons. She was incredible at what she did and loved by all. She was an intelligent, hard-working, strong, and independent woman who raised two girls primarily on her own while working to support her family. Evelyn was positive, extremely kind, loving, generous and had the most amazing sense of humor. She was a people person. Evelyn touched everyone who she met. She was like a ray of sunshine. She brightened up any room she walked into, could put a smile on anyone’s face and could always make you laugh - even in hard times. Her humor, positivity and love of life was inspiring. When asked how she stayed so positive through her life, she said she did this by using humor and not letting herself get mad: “You have to be happy or else it will ruin your insides.” “Being off the wall helps.” “Don’t let things bring you down, put your chin up and don’t let others effect you.” She constantly put others above herself and found joy in helping others. She loved people: her friends, family and anyone around her. She loved her time with “the gals,” sewing, dancing, music, bike riding, walking on the beach, her Scottish heritage, gambling, Marilyn Monroe, potato chips and spritzers, just to name a few. She simply loved life, found joy in everything she did and gave joy to all others around her. Above all else, she loved her children. “All of her children” she would say (her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren). And we all deeply love Evelyn and will continue to love her and keep her in our memory and hearts forever. It was an honor and privilege to have her in our lives.
