Obituary of William F. Palmer

Wiliam F. Palmer, 90, of Merrick, NY passed away at his home on January 20, 2024.

Bill was born in Brooklyn, NY to the late William L. Palmer, who was a NYC Poloice officer, and Margaret V. Palmer.

After graduating from La Salle Academy High Scool in 1951, he received his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Brooklyn Polytechnical Instsitute in 1959.

In the 1960's Bill was employed by Sperry Inc., and was part of the engineering team that developed the SR-71 Blackbird spy plane at Edwards Air Force base in California.

In 1971, Bill received his NYS Professional Engineers license and worked as an HVAC engineer for the NYC Bureau of Building Design. He designed the heating and air conditioning systems for many of the police precincts and firehouses and libraries throughout NYC.

In 1982, Bill worked as a project manager for the Nassau County Department of Buildings. He managed many of the major building projects throughout the county.

After retiring in 1968, he formed Palmer Engineering LLP and worked with his son Edward on various HVAC engineering projects in Manhattan.

Bill was an avid sportsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. In 1989, he built a 32-foot lobster boat with his sons in his front yard in Merrick. He kept the boat at Guy Lombardo Marina in Freeport. He also built a 1/4 scale steam locomotive in his garage.

Bill is predeceased by his brother Robert of Macungie, PA, and is survived by his wife Alice; his sons, William Jr. and his wife Brenda, John, and Edward and his wife Felecia; and his three grandchildren, Jackeline, Dylan and Serena.
