Linda E. Rohan, RN Obituary

Linda Elizabeth Rohan, mother of three and a registered nurse, died peacefully in her sleep at her home on Monday, overnight from her 75th birthday. Née Cruickshank, Linda grew up between Vermont and New Jersey, with a stint in Mississippi, in a family of five children. Her father was a combat veteran of the Second World War in France, later an engineer who sought a peaceful life for his children upon his return. He built them a swimming pool with a diving board much loved by children and grandchildren alike. A young Linda sought challenge, however, and threw herself into hectic hospital life in the tumultuous New York City of the 1970s. Whilst living and working in Greenwich Village through overnight shifts handling surgery and emergency room patients, she met engineering student Brian Rohan, her future husband, at a Manhattan College reception in the Bronx in 1971. The two were paired from then to eternity. With children on the way, the couple moved to Merrick, Long Island, in a house with a f ireplace, lawns and trees for their budding family to enjoy. The school was within walking distance and worlds away from the stress of city life. Linda continued to work in her field as a manager of visiting nursing teams well into her 60s, caring for the sick in line with her original vocation. She imparted on her children the values of humanism, duty of care, responsibility and conscientiousness. Linda was a devout Catholic, raised through its education system and hospital network. She applied what were ultimately universal secular values throughout her work and family life. Rare were her times of doubt, and faith guided her through life decisions, raising a family, and shaping her children. Linda suffered a stroke in 2015 which left her immobile, but she kept her spirits up and continued life to her fullest despite being confined to a wheelchair. In those difficult years, she imparted on her son Timothy the ways of care – this time as patient instructor. She is survived by her devoted husband, Brian, daughter Maggie, sons Timothy, Brian and wife Ioana, and grandchildren Tristan and Alexandre. Her funeral mass is on the 26th of March, 11 am at the Curé of Ars Church in Merrick, NY.
