Among my first and fondest memories was spending what was to be a week, but later was extended for another, with my Aunt Madeline and Uncle Paul (my godfather) and my cousins Jean and Carol. That was the summer that Jean had her first job, Uncle Paul developed an ulcer, and Carol's best friend and neighbor, Janet, was on vacation with her family. And there we were, 13-year-old Carol and 10-year-old me, on our own everyday, taking the subway, taking long walks to the movie theater, shopping on Knickerbocker Avenue, and feasting on BonTon potato chips from the corner store. I think I learned a lot and matured a bit during that holiday with my cousin. Thank you, Carol, for excusing my immaturity and silliness with your grace and good humor. You were an extraordinarily wonderful companion and friend.
